Disaster management refers to how we can protect a preserve maximum number of lives and property during a disaster. India has been traditionally vulnerable to the natural disasters on the account of its unique geo-climatic conditions. Floods , droughts, cyclone , earthquake , landslides would have been a recurrent phenomena.
In Tripura from 1822 to till date more than 65times we faced earth quake and the highest magnitude was 7.6 in 1918.
Disaster management occupies an important place in the country’s policy framework as it is the poor and the under privileged who are worst affected on account of disasters.
In Tripura , Revenue Department is the Nodal Department for Disaster Management .Tripura is prone to various natural disasters particular to earth quake .The state is situated in the most vulnerable earthquake prone zone –V of India. Govt. of Tripura has formed Disaster Management Team/Quick Response Team in different levels viz. State Block level , Panchayet level and Institution level.
The Department of Higher Education has formed college level Response Team in Tripura. As a part of it , Ambedkar College has formed a Quick Response Team. The college level cell organizes awareness camp /Mock drill round the year to sensitise the students ,staff and local people .

Safety Tips
Earthquake
During an Earthquake:
1.Stay away from windows, bookcases, file cabinets, heavy mirrors, and other heavy objects that could fall.
2.Duck under a desk or sturdy table.
3.Watch for falling plaster or ceiling tiles.
4.Stay undercover until the shaking stops, and hold onto your cover.
5.If the desk or table you are under moves… move with it.
6.If outside, stay outside, and move to an area clear of overhead trees, power lines, or objects that could fall from a structure.
7.If in your car, stop, but not on a bridge, or under trees or a power line.
After The Earthquake:
1.Be prepared for aftershocks, plan for cover when they occur.
2.Check for injuries, give first aid as necessary.
3.Remain calm, try to reassure others.
4.Wear shoes to avoid injury from broken glass.
5.Check for fire and take appropriate actions.
6.Check gas, water, and electric lines.
7.Tune to emergency broadcast system on radio.
Flood
Before a Flood:
1.Buy flood insurance
2.Avoid building in a floodplain
3.Elevate furnace, water heater, and electric panel
4.Install check valves in sewer traps
5.Construct barriers
6.Seal basement walls
During a Flood:
1.Listen to radio or TV for information
2.Move immediately to high ground
3.Be aware of streams, drainage channels, and canyons
4.Do not walk through moving water
5.Do not drive into flooded areas
6.After a Flood:
7.Listen to radio or TV for information
8.Avoid floodwaters and moving water
9.Be aware of areas where floodwaters have receded
10.Stay away from downed power lines
11.Return home only when authorities indicate it is safe
